The grim facts of US politics…

I’ve had a few conversations lately with people who have expressed the opinion that American politics today are qualitatively worse than they have ever been, to which I have responded, “nonsense.” Why? See above.
I’m not saying US politics are in a good place. Far from it. Simply that this really has been going on for quite a long time. Is the current GOP posturing and chest-thumping that has hobbled domestic economic policy horrible? Sure. Is it more horrible than the GOP meddling in foreign affairs that extended an unnecessary war that was destructive to the social fabric of our nation (not to mention physically devastating to the people of southeast Asia and the soldiers who fought and were maimed or killed therein) therefore extending the conflict by another 6 years?
The story above is a precise example of what President Eisenhower warned of in his farewell address. And Eisenhower knew his own VP would happily participate in the undermining of American principles for the sake of profit for industries that were supported by the military and military action, were that man in a position to lead the nation.
