Watch how this story unfolds carefully…

It was only a matter of time before someone filed suit against the city of New York for performing random searches of passengers’ bags on the Subway.

My guess is that this case will end up being far more important in determining the direction of personal privacy in this country post-9/11/01 than any of the issues associated with the renewal of the thrice cursed Patriot Act. If the courts toss this suit out then all bets are off and the argument that the safety of the many trumps the rights of the individual will have won a resounding victory to be followed shortly by surveillance cameras, wiretaps and all manner of official observation gaining ground in our lives.

If the courts rule with the plaintiffs then we’re in a whole different ballgame.
